TV & RADIO BROADCASTING

Euronews Georgia, a new news channel with a state-of-the-art technology complex built in the heart of Tbilisi in an old building, started broadcasting in Georgian in late summer 2020. VisionHOUSE specialists implemented this international project on time, despite the challenges of the pandemic.

“We developed an elegant solution that reduced the cost of the project by several times. At the same time, all the standardized requirements of Euronews were met flawlessly.”

Almost before the installation, air travel was banned and strict quarantine measures were introduced. The project was in danger of failure.

But there are no obstacles for true professionals. Four VisionHOUSE specialists took a charter flight, strictly followed all the requirements of the observation, regularly reported to the doctor on duty about their health status, until they were finally allowed to work at the TV channel.

“The European side has put forward high demands on the equipment and infrastructure,” comments Oleksandr Selyaninov, deputy director of VisionHOUSE. “Ми розробили елегантне рішення, яке знизило вартість проекту в кілька разів. При цьому всі стандартизовані вимоги Euronews були виконані бездоганно”.

With the remote support of the VisionHOUSE team, Alexander Petishkin, Sergey Syzykh, Ilya Grinichenko and Pavel Shcheblykin installed equipment, tested, trained staff, helped develop graphic templates, supported and accompanied the Euronews Georgia team before, during and for 10 days after the launch. Dmytro Bielik set up cameras and lighting equipment in the TV channel’s studio.

“In the project business, this kind of caring support is called baby-sitting,” says Oleksandr Selyaninov. “It was important for both us and the customer that the launch went off flawlessly, at the highest level.”

The newsroom, editing, on-air graphics and video wall management are based on Avid Technology solutions. The highlight of the project was a series of integration bridges between Avid systems, BroadStream Oasys automated playout and inMedia digital archive systems. Robotic cameras, studios, camera and editing equipment, hardware and archives interact at a high level of integration, like a harmonious orchestra.

  • In a pandemic, an international turnkey project was completed on time
  • Elegant solution clearly meets EURONEWS corporate standards
  • Newsroom, editing, broadcast graphics and video wall management from Avid Technology
  • The highlight of the project is the integration bridges between Avid, BroadStream Oasys, and the inMedia archive.
  • Robotic cameras, studios, camera and editing equipment, hardware and archives interact at a high level of integration – like a well-coordinated orchestra.

An interesting fact: the pedestals for the studio cameras were made at the Tbilisi Aviation Plant, which produced Su-25 attack aircraft.

Now, international, national and local news from a European perspective is broadcast 24/7 in Georgian.

“This is our first TV channel in Georgia,” said Alexander Selyaninov. “VisionHOUSE specialists and manufacturing partners supported the guys remotely, the Euronews Georgia team flawlessly met the deadlines for preparing the premises, and despite the restrictions on work within the walls of the architectural monument, everyone managed to do it and meet the deadlines. Our installers returned by ferry. ”

“I am very pleased that Euronews Georgia has started broadcasting in Georgian. I am immensely proud of the way Euronews and the Silknet and Euronews Georgia team have worked together to launch a 24/7 TV channel in just one year,” said Euronews Head of Operations Michael Peters.

“I think it is very important that in this difficult time of crisis, when the whole world is fighting the pandemic, we managed to keep our promise and guaranteed the timely broadcast of Euronews Georgia,” commented Giorgi Ramishvili, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Silknet, and wished the channel’s team all possible success.

“We have all joined a team of experienced professionals who share the values of Euronews Georgia – independence, impartiality, diversity of views,” said Jeano Zhvania, Director of Euronews Georgia, adding that this launch is an important milestone for the entire nation.

“Many thanks to Euronews Georgia for their trust and cooperation, and to the entire VisionHOUSE team for these emotions and the result of many days of work and many nights of installation,” said Nikolai Zaluzhny, director of VisionHOUSE. “Hard work, commitment, and skill brought together professionals in a difficult time to take this big step forward together.”

The BroadStream Oasys software platform, developed specifically for broadcasters more than 25 years ago, is based on a unique software architecture and standard hardware. This elegant and affordable system with rich and vibrant functionality combines flexibility, scalability, and reliability.

In 2019, Novy TV channel’s broadcasting facilities were moved to the same building as STB as part of the Starlight Media holding’s strategy. Since STB’s playout was transferred to the integrated Broadstream Oasys system in 2017, the technical management decided to expand it to support the broadcasting of Novy TV channel.

System integrator VisionHOUSE, BroadStream’s partner in Ukraine, provided the development of the Oasys integrated playout extension for Novy TV channel, equipment supply, implementation, launch and training of employees. The agreement was signed in September 2019, and test broadcasting started in November with a new playout.

This integration of the media holding’s broadcasting capacities allows the media holding to optimize its investments and save resources:

  • employees who have been trained to work on the same technology become interchangeable;
  • A single space serves the workflow of three TV channels;
  • maintenance, modernization, and the operation of one system instead of many is faster and more efficient.

The BroadStream Oasys integrated playout solution has successfully delivered on-air graphics, playout and automation to many Ukrainian TV companies.

Since 2013, BroadStream Oasys integrated playout has been the choice:

  • media holdings (9 TV channels of Inter Media Group, 3 TV channels of Starlight Media Group)
  • news channels (112 Ukraine, Nash, NewsOne, ZIK)
  • niche TV channel Nadezhda TV
  • regional TV channel “TV5”
  • Volia content provider
  • Film UA
  • 5 channel
  • Parliamentary TV channel “RADA”

The BroadStream Oasys software platform, developed specifically for broadcasters more than 25 years ago, is based on a unique software architecture and standard hardware. This elegant and affordable system with rich and vibrant functionality combines flexibility, scalability, and reliability.

“The client (Starlight Media holding) has been using BroadStream Oasys integrated playout for 3 years, was not disappointed and ordered the system extension for Novy Kanal. So, we have something to be proud of – both the solution and our work,” commented Andriy Mosharov, Head of Technical Service at VisionHOUSE and project manager.

The program “Countdown”, recognized by the Council of Europe as the most balanced talk show of the pre-election race, showed a new era of interactive television in action, where the viewer takes an active role. The VisionLINK platform made it possible to engage audiences of different age groups, from different regions of Ukraine, through various communication channels.

Objective show, active audience

In the spring of 2019, the National Public Broadcasting Company of Ukraine (UA:PBC) launched an innovative format of debates between presidential candidates: candidates with roughly equal ratings were invited to the studio, speeches were strictly timed, answers were immediately checked by experts, and the results were announced in the studio. Viewers could cast their votes via the website or by phone. The VisionLink system collected voting data from phone calls and the website, analyzed and displayed graphical results on studio screens, on air and on the website. All the voices of the viewers who actively participated in the most objective show of the election race showed the real opinion of the channel’s audience.

“The Countdown was broadcast on UA: Pershyi, UA: Krym, radio station UR-1, on YouTube and on UA:PBC’s Facebook page. After the presidential race, the project continued its work in the parliamentary elections. Newly elected MPs and other guests are now invited to the studio, and experts and viewers ask them questions.

  • viewer voting via the website and by phone
  • data aggregation and analysis
  • integration with the broadcast graphics system
  • instant display of graphical voting results on studio screens, on air, on the website
  • attracting viewers of different age groups from different regions

Attack by bots

“To prevent multiple voting attempts from one number, the system responds to the second call with a reply: “Thank you, you have already voted.” All subsequent calls are simply dropped,” says Vitaly Zaikin, product manager at VisionLINK. “It was not without incident! During a debate with one of the candidates, who was connected to intelligence agencies, we overcame an attempt to rig the vote with thousands of bot calls that almost brought down the system. We figured it out in time and weeded out the fake votes.”

The future of an objective public TV show

“We want to continue our cooperation with Internews so that this program will be broadcast on a regular basis,” comments Kateryna Feleniuk, executive producer of The Countdown. “According to the results of the monitoring supported by the Council of Europe, “Countdown” was recognized as the most balanced talk show among 10 national channels. We are not tied to any oligarch or political force. We had impartial experts who asked questions of everyone equally. Yes, we have big competitors – commercial channels – but we are distinguished by our honesty. We have on our side impartiality, impartiality, professional qualifications of experts, and hosts who can express their opinions. We really wanted to engage the audience and add interactivity to the race, and we succeeded.”

The audience was involved in the show in the studio, via the website, and by phone. The studio has created favorable conditions for communication with the audience: viewers raise their hands and are given the opportunity to ask questions or speak out. During the show, a website with a poll is running, and viewers can vote online. For the older audience, especially in remote regions where the Internet is not easy to access, we provide telephone channels from Kyivstar, Vodafone and lifecell.

It’s a very cool thing when viewers can influence what happens in the studio,” said Kateryna.

“VisionLink provides two-way communication between the TV channel and the viewer,” comments Vitaly Zaikin. “Television has changed and will never be the same again. The digital audience is growing, young people want to watch videos on mobile devices or on a computer, and the older generation is in no hurry to leave their favorite TV sets. Both want to make an impact! It’s good that there are shows that engage viewers of all ages in participation. We thank UA:PBC for their trust, admire the success of “Countdown” and wish the UA:PBC team new bright victories!”

Dante technology made it possible to connect all the sound signals of the NewsOne TV channel: microphones, all sources on the set, external sounds passing through the SDI video matrix and the communication matrix with the Dante card. All settings, routing, and signal monitoring are performed from a single workstation. What’s more, you can even control this entire “orchestra” using a tablet that “sees” all Dante devices in a Wi-Fi network.

At the beginning of 2019, NewsOne, one of Ukraine’s leading news channels, added a Yamaha CL 5 remote control with support for the rapidly gaining popularity Dante audio protocol to its equipment fleet. The Yamaha CL5 remote control was used for the first time for live broadcasting.

Objectives.

NewsOne’s technical managers approached system integrator VisionHOUSE with a request for a comprehensive audio solution that would connect audio and video paths plus a communication matrix into a single whole, while eliminating the limitations of old audio consoles in configuring the path and speeding up the setup process.

The main task was to replace 3 audio consoles with limited capabilities with one fully functional console with Dante protocol for simultaneous operation with 72+ monaural sound sources and with the ability to work at distances from 100 m to 10 km if the shooting location is located up to 10 km from the hardware and studio block of the NewsOne TV channel.
Today, more than 400 manufacturers produce about 2000 Dante-based devices. Their number is constantly growing, far outpacing other audio interfaces. The integrator offered several solutions in different budgets and configurations.  As a result of negotiations and discussions, NewsOne settled on the VisionHOUSE offer with a Yamaha CL5 remote control. The functions and speed of setup required by the customer are incorporated in the Dante protocol, and its use in the Yamaha CL5 made this remote control attractive from a budgetary point of view.

  • control of all audio signals on the TV channel from one workstation (+ the ability to control from

  • a huge bank of effects and sound processing capabilities

  • rich functionality

  • reasonable budget

  • scalability

Solutions

The Yamaha CL5 is designed with the latest technology based on the manufacturer’s vast experience. Sound engineers especially appreciate the CL5’s large effects bank, which is always at hand, its great switching potential, and its high reliability. The remote control allows you to save and load complex presets for each project separately, and the Dan Dugan auto-fader function helps the sound engineer “remember to enter” a guest or presenter’s cue into the program. This is a very useful feature during marathons of many hours: the disadvantages of working with audio are minimized.

The new remote control opens up the possibility of using Shure ULXD4QE Dante radio systems, which do not need to be tied to the standees at all and can be connected to the remote control via Ethernet-Dante network anywhere.

“We can talk about the benefits of this solution for a long time,” comments Vyacheslav Polishchuk, VisionHOUSE project manager. “Reliability, unlimited resources, scalability of the system, transition to the real use of IP in broadcasting… This is a step into the future, in step with modern technologies.”

The solution based on the Dante protocol is offered due to its reliability, low latency for sound transmission and processing (from 150ms to 1msec), rich functionality, and ease of configuration. Dante provides a 100% connection guarantee between any two Dante devices.

As required by the customer, the system provides operation of 72+ sound sources, has direct access to 32 motorized faders, several layers of faders, and can work with sound sources at distances from 100 m to 10 km.
The final agreement was reached at the end of January, and the delivery was made in a short time. In early February, all the equipment was delivered to NewsOne.

A one-day course was enough for experienced NewsOne sound engineers to learn how to work with the Yamaha CL5.

“Thanks to Dante technology, the work of NewsOne engineers has changed for the better,” says Vyacheslav Nepochatykh, chief engineer at NewsOne. “First of all, it gave us speed and convenience: no more soldering audio connectors at night, instead, simple mouse manipulations in the Dante Controller program. Tasks that used to take all night and require soldering and laying dozens of cables can now be completed in 20 minutes without leaving your computer. We can even work remotely.
Secondly, we have more opportunities with less equipment and for less money. We got a network with a huge number of audio channels, eliminated the need for audio distributors and patch panels, gradually got rid of stage boxes, and together with the video matrix connected to the network, we are moving away from using separate embedders and de-embedders.
We also received ample opportunities for equipment redundancy: Dante technology supports hot-swapping hardware with instant restoration of all settings and routing, because information about current switching is stored on each device in the network; and loading a preset in the Dante Controller program takes only a couple of minutes.
Integration with the intercom system deserves special attention. All we needed to do in terms of preparations was to run Ethernet cables to the intercom panels and to the Dante switches. The installation was done in one night by three people. They used more than 30 ports of the service communication matrix via the Dante network, “tying” the inputs and outputs of the Yamaha CL5 console. Most of the night was spent testing the updated audio path. “

“We are grateful to VisionHOUSE for their help in selecting equipment, smart engineering solutions, fast deliveries, and timely resolution of disputes.”

One night to switch to a new technology

NewsOne is a news channel broadcasting continuously from 07:00 to 24:00. Without dismantling the old equipment, a console and several devices were assembled in test mode for training sound engineers.

In a short time, the system solution with the Yamaha CL5 remote control proved to be a great success during the 24-hour telethon, without a single technical problem and without any errors on the part of the staff.

“It wasn’t easy to switch to the new sound system unnoticed by the audience, given the intensive work schedule, but we managed it in one night,” says Vyacheslav Polishchuk. “NewsOne and VisionHOUSE engineers trained the sound engineers to work with the new Yamaha CL5 console, performed preparatory work for two weeks, and then got rid of many analog devices and hundreds of meters of microphone cables overnight, thus completely eliminating the old audio path. We assembled a new audio path, set up the necessary signal routing in the Dante network, tested the new system, and went on air in the morning.

This was the second installation of a Dante audio console on television in Kyiv. I assume that in Ukraine as well*. The telethon showed that the new remote control passed the test drive perfectly.”

“With the Yamaha CL5 system, we finally got what we’ve been looking for: a reliable, large and convenient sound desk that fully covered all the needs of our sound engineers. During the transition period, it allowed us to fully combine parts of the old analog and new digital paths,” commented Sergey Skripchenko, technical director of NewsOne TV channel. “We are grateful to VisionHOUSE for their assistance in the selection of equipment, competent engineering solutions, fast deliveries, and timely resolution of disputes.”

2019

*The first installation of the SSL T-S300 remote control with Dante technology was carried out at the Inter TV channel’s PTS by VisionHOUSE employees.

At the end of winter 2019, VisionHOUSE, a system integrator, received a request from Inter TV channel to provide a proposal for the modernization of video and audio consoles for PTS-2 of the media holding. The functionality of the solutions on SSL TS300 and Carbonite Black Plus offered by the VisionHOUSE integrator far exceeded the customer’s wishes. All equipment was successfully installed on PTS2 in a short time.

Audio mixer upgrade

“Inter TV channel needed a new sound mixer with competitive advantages, so we offered the SSL TS300 digital mixing console that works with the innovative DANTE protocol,” comments Vyacheslav Polishchuk, VisionHOUSE project manager. “It was a risky decision, as broadcast-grade remotes from this manufacturer were previously presented on the Ukrainian market. They have not yet had time to prove themselves in the field. But we took the risk, realizing that the level of quality and technical capabilities of the SSL TS300 console far exceeds the capabilities of competitive solutions.”

In addition to the SSL TS300, VisionHOUSE’s proposal included third-party components to fully comply with the specifications and minimize project costs. This solution provides access to 1024 channels of audio input and 1024 channels of audio output via the DANTE protocol, allows you to receive and send signals inside the PTS: 64 analog audio, 3 independent MADI streams of 64 channels each (round-trip), 4 AES-3 (in) and 4 AES (out), which are necessary for working with Glensound commentary consoles.

  • a step into the future and more freedom with the Dante protocol
  • Bestselling Ross Video Carbonite Black Plus with XPression LiveCG graphics system
  • lifetime free software upgrades for audio and video mixers
  • prompt delivery, installation and launch

We also offered 2 large stage boxes with 32 inputs and 24 outputs and 1 small stage box with 8 inputs and 8 outputs. All the standby boxes can operate at a distance of up to 1000 meters, connecting to the PTS via a hybrid SMPTE 311 cable and receiving power from the UPS inside the PTS. Stageboxes can be powered not only from the PTS, but also from a regular local 220V network right on the set, if the distance between the PTS and the stageboxes exceeds 1000 meters.

Advantages of the TS300 digital audio mixer from Solid State Logic

  • High sound quality thanks to the use of a 64-bit floating point operating system, RTOS (Real-time operating system)
  • Minimal delays in signal transmission
  • A large and constantly growing bank of sound effects
  • Delays
  • Dynamics
  • EQ
  • Revers
  • De-noiser
  • Enhanser
  • Auto Mixer
  • tools for measuring the volume level (including the EBU R128 standard)

All these and other advantages make the console self-sufficient both in sound processing and in evaluating its parameters.

All subsequent upgrades/additions to the SSL remotes processing bank are free of charge.

The broadcast-grade SSL solution includes the System T25 main and redundant system modules and the S300 console itself.

System T25 (Engine) provides the ability to expand up to 3072×3072 audio channels by adding additional Dante cards. The S300 console has two large equivalent touchscreen panels, 4 banks of 15 layers, each consisting of 32 + 1 direct access faders. Internal automation of the console has expanded the creative field of work of PTS sound engineers, as many features were previously unavailable on an analog console.

The dimensions of the S300 console fit into the sound compartment of the PTS. The PTS upgrade also included the installation of a console, replacement of the sound compartment tabletop, plus related mechanical and welding work, and the installation of new hybrid connectors for the stage boxes.

At the end of June, the old sound equipment was dismantled, and in mid-July, the installation of the new equipment, its integration and staff training were completed.

After the upgrade, the workspace expanded and became more comfortable for work.

Modernization of the video mixer

The old Grass Valley Korona remote control, which had failed and was unable to perform the tasks of the PTS2, needed to be replaced. The VisionHOUSE integrator offered the Ross Carbonite Black Plus system, which supports all the necessary formats, has the necessary functions, fits into the dimensions and provides additional functionality: the XPression LiveGC graphics system as a gift and lifetime video mixer software upgrades.

Ross Carbonite Black Plus supports

  • all formats for 36 inputs, UHD/4K, 1080p, 1080i, 720p, 576i on each line.

  • 36 inputs and 25 outputs 2ME with the possibility of upgrading to 3ME,

  • 5 (4 + 1) Keyers for 1 M/E plus the MiniME function, which allows you to form a remote control from 2ME to 18 KEERs in MiniME mode (basic function).
  • two Chroma Keys for 1 M / E
  • two 2D DVE channels per ME (a total of four wpml_nbspDVEs per 2ME)
  • внутрішній кліпстор: 4 канали ємністю 8Gb.

Carbonite Black Plus has the ability to work with Fill Key at the same time, and you can load from external media in the required formats. Down/Cross Conversion on 12 AUX outputs is also possible as a basic function.

Carbonite Black Plus provides RGB/YUV color correction on all 36 inputs and 12 outputs. The 2ME console is equipped with two full-fledged ME lines with 24 direct access buttons, a 96-button macro bank, and color-coded backlight mnemonics.

The panel successfully “fit” into the customer’s PTS tabletop, which was important due to the limited dimensions of the director’s compartment.

Carbonite Black Plus has the ability to control mixer settings both from control panels and from an external PC: using the free Ross DashBoard program, you can control all Ross Video devices available in the PTS and boards from other manufacturers (more than 80) for installation in OpenGear frames.

The console and console baskets have redundant power supplies with hot-swap support.

The manufacturer has provided additional bonuses: buyers of Carbonite Ross Video consoles receive Ross XPression LiveCG titling software (saving 2600 USD), which allows them to overlay full-fledged 2D graphics on video. A computer with LiveCG connects to the cart via IP and is controlled from the console of the remote control.

And one more main advantage of the VisionHOUSE solution: Ross Video guarantees a lifetime free software upgrade for all sold lighters.

Ross Carbonite Black Plus was delivered in less than a month. It took 5 days to dismantle the old equipment and install the new one, including replacing the old monitors with 47-inch LCD panels, which increased the number of monitor windows from 18 to 32.

After the upgrade, the space from the camera engineer to the monitor field was expanded, which provided more comfortable working conditions.

2019

Ross Video guarantees a lifetime free software upgrade for all sold video mixers.

System integrator VisionHOUSE  has completed a multi-stage project of a turnkey technological complex for ZIK TV channel (2015-2017). A state-of-the-art complex designed to produce and broadcast news, programs, and other media products was installed in a historic building in Kyiv, and remote locations were integrated.

VisionHOUSE provided project development, equipment supply, commissioning, staff training and commissioning of the entire technological complex.

ZIK TV channel first went on the air in 2010 with in-house projects, and in 2014 began its transition to the national level, expanding the range of author’s projects to twenty, most of which are in the genre of investigative journalism. The channel’s projects are produced by ZIK-Lviv and ZIK-Kyiv studios, which were opened in May 2014. In early October 2016, ZIK’s new central studio was officially unveiled in the capital’s Zhovtnevy Palats International Center for Culture and Arts.

Issues.

“Working with a historical architectural monument proved to be a serious challenge, once again requiring us to come up with a non-standard solution,” said Yuriy Brushko, Head of Design at VisionHOUSE. – “In the Zhovtnevy Palace, the placement of technological hardware complexes in existing premises with certain requirements means that it is impossible to change the design of walls, partitions, ceilings and implement optimal cable channels. It was necessary to fulfill more than difficult conditions for preserving the unchanged appearance of the building, main structures, communications, etc.”

Also, at all levels of media production, it was necessary to integrate the work of studios and ASBs in different cities.

Solutions

“We are satisfied with the result: ZIK media complex works as a single unit, the entire workflow is organized by modern IP solutions. The remote locations (in Kyiv and Lviv) are closely interconnected in production, and direct interaction between all points of the channel’s presence has been implemented. The technological complex brings the channel to a new level of modern television production. The newsroom from the world leader provides new capacities for news production,” said Vadym Zak, Deputy CEO of ZIK media holding.

Project features:

  • Working in a historic building
  • Integration of remote locations
  • IP systems
  • cellular bonding for live broadcasts
  • modern newsroom
  • centralized management

At the heart of the studio hardware unit (SHU) is the Ross Video Carbonite Black video mixer, the world leader in the mid-priced segment of high-end director’s consoles. The Soundcraft digital audio mixing console, the only one in its class, allows two engineers to work simultaneously. Studio graphics are based on the leading Ross Video XPression graphics system, controlled from Video Mixers via IP: after pressing the Video Mixers button on the title station, a playlist of prepared graphics (video with sound) is launched. Studio playout – Avid AirSpeed.
The service communication system is organized on the basis of intercom solutions from Clear-Com: the Eclipse HX-Delta matrix is equipped with 48 interface ports, two two-line telephone hybrids, and a two-channel analog interface (partyline). To communicate with remote locations, IP interfaces are used, which are also integrated with Eclipse HX-Delta. Service communication between the locations in Kyiv (Zhovtnevyi Palats and Berkovetska Street), the Central Administrative Department and Lviv was implemented.
At the moment, the installation of the next stage of the project has been completed: Studio-2 and ASB-2, built on similar systems for seamless integration.

“The work of both studios and the ASC can be organized in teleconference mode and independently of each other,” comments Maxim Kostennikov, Head of the VisionHOUSE Systems Integration Department. – “It is possible to use studio cameras together with the organization of light alarm signals. The audio interfaces of hardware studios can be combined with flexible and efficient control of audio stage boxes. The coverage and operation of radio microphones is integrated with the entire ZIK complex: Studio-1, Studio-2, corridors, newsroom, etc. Service communication with all remote locations between different cities has been introduced.”

Ingest – recording of media files and external feeds – in the central hardware room is performed on Quadrus systems integrated with Avid post-production systems. The current installation includes another Quadrus-2 system.

The world standard of newsroom

The editing rooms are equipped with Avid Media Composer video editing and Avid ProTools audio editing stations, which are integrated with a newsroom based on the leading Avid MediaCentral platform.

The integrated playout with redundancy from BroadStream Oasys, which has proven itself in numerous VisionHOUSE installations, is responsible for playback, broadcasting and on-air design.

The connection to the studio on Berkovetskaya is realized through direct optical communication using Norwia technologies: HD-SDI, IP and service communication signals are transmitted in both directions. The same optical line connects ZIK with the TV tower: the signal is broadcast and received from external lines. The connection to Lviv is carried out using LiveU equipment (portable devices for transmitting signals via cellular communication channels) and Haivision Makito systems (streaming signals via IP).

“Despite the difficulties with equipment placement, manufacturing of technological furniture individually for all workplaces and their relative positioning, we have successfully completed the task set by the customer,” summarizes Yuriy Brushko. – “All the equipment of the complex is located ergonomically for the preparation, creation and broadcasting of a television product.

A multi-stage project to modernize the infrastructure of one of the country’s largest media holdings. A project of this scale and complexity was implemented for the first time in Ukraine.

“Inter Media Group has put into operation a new multi-channel broadcasting room that implements advanced HD broadcasting technologies. The commissioning of the new broadcasting complex was carried out by Inter Media Group’s technical directorate together with VisionHOUSE, a system integrator.

“A project of this scale and complexity has been implemented in Ukraine for the first time. BroadStream Oasys integrated broadcasting systems are among the best in their class. They offer a unique set of features, combining several technological blocks of the media workflow. The solution provides a technological reserve for the future development of Inter Media Group, transition to new standards and broadcasting formats,” said Nikolay Zaluzhny, Director of VisionHOUSE.

“We implement technical solutions that are used in the best television centers in the world.”

  • Multichannel integrated broadcasting on a new generation platform

  • Rich graphics capabilities

The integrated complex is based on the latest BroadStream Oasys automated playout system and Imagine Communications Platinum VX switching matrices.

“We are implementing technical solutions that are used in the world’s best television centers. The broadcasting complex is designed in such a way that it will allow us to quickly switch to HD broadcasting, the image quality of which is several times higher than in the current SD standard. Also, the new broadcasting room has great possibilities for graphic design of the air,” explained Denis Shelukhin, Technical Director of Inter Media Group.

Most of the programs on Inter Media Group’s TV channels have been produced in HD for more than two years. In preparation for the transition to 16:9 broadcasting and subsequently to the HD standard, in October 2016, the company purchased 17 studio HD cameras from Hitachi, one of the world’s leading innovators in the production of professional television equipment. For Hitachi, the supply of professional HDTV cameras to Inter Media Group was the first contract for this class of equipment in the Ukrainian television market.

“Hitachi has been successfully developing premium TV technologies for a wide range of customers. The company listens closely to the requirements of users today and helps to build the right path to the transition to tomorrow’s technologies,” said Kemal Yulmaz, CEO of Hitachi Kokusai, Turkey.

Cameras The Hitachi Z-HD6000  has proven itself in sports broadcasts, music concerts and other events. To accelerate and optimize production processes, Star Media chose a powerful post-production system based on Avid’s technology solutions, which have been proven by Hollywood and other leading film studios and have been used in the creation of a large number of Oscar-winning films.

Star Media’s new post-production facility includes 5 upgraded Avid Media Composer video editing systems based on Macintosh computers, 5 Avid Pro Tools audio editing stations, 5 Avid Pro Tools HD Native HDI/O sets, Digidesign C24 sound consoles, ISIS 5000 shared storage system on two chassis (32 TB each) and Avid Interplay PAM content management system.

Avid offers the most comprehensive solution for the complete post-production workflow.

  • “First, Avid Pro Tools audio editing systems are tightly integrated with Avid Media Composer video editing systems. We have completely switched to sound production on Pro Tools stations operating in five sound rooms, and we are very pleased.
  • Secondly, the Avid ISIS 5000 system solves the problem of integrated work with video and audio materials.
  • Thirdly, the Avid Interplay system helps to systematize the work with the huge amount/volume of content we work with on a daily basis.”

Pavlo Turynin, Head of Post Production at Star Media, comments:

“The main factors in choosing the solution are the convenience and speed of work with this hardware and software complex. Avid offers the most comprehensive solution for the complete post-production workflow. First, Avid Pro Tools audio editing systems are tightly integrated with Avid Media Composer video editing systems. We have completely switched to sound production on Pro Tools stations operating in five sound rooms, and we are very pleased. Secondly, the Avid ISIS 5000 system solves the problem of integrated work with video and audio materials. Thirdly, the Avid Interplay system helps to systematize the work with the huge amount of content we work with every day.

Given the fact that Final Cut editing systems are not evolving, we decided to turn to Avid systems. This is a very good solution for the tasks we perform. There are different kinds of tasks, and we can’t say that one product is better than another, each is designed for its own group of users. Final Cut works well for projects of up to two episodes. And it is definitely more convenient to work with large projects above two series on Avid. One example of recent projects is the ten-episode series Anna German, which we edited entirely in Avid Media Composer.

There is an interesting story behind this movie. The editing director we invited to work on this project had experience in Avid in the past, but he had recently worked using Final Cut Pro, and the material had already been digitized and prepared for use in the Avid Media Composer system, so the director had to learn everything from scratch. In the end, at the end of the project, he said that if he had edited the series in Final Cut, the editing would have taken two to three weeks longer. And speed is a key factor in our work.”
