Imagine Communications has completed a large-scale modernization for Omantel, the national telecommunications company of Oman. The latest developments accelerate the performance and resiliency of Omantel’s networks with the Selenio™ Media Convergence Platform (MCP).
Telecommunications company Omantel has become the first user of Selenio MCP. This platform helps media companies combine baseband digital audio and video signals, as well as add compressed and uncompressed IP media signals to their current workflows. Omantel uses the power and flexibility of the Selenio MCP to accelerate its network, which connects 55 locations via dedicated fiber to deliver high-quality HD signals to studios and TV centers across the country. The same platform also supports backhaul for remote production, including sports programs and national events.
The new project modernizes Omantel’s operations and moves the company from legacy technologies to Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) systems by adding Selenio MCP network modules that support digital and video signaling over fiber within a single 3 Rack Unit chassis. The result is uninterrupted signal transport in critical events based on open standards over telecommunications and media networks.
The Selenio MCP solution supports IP protocols and enables Omantel to easily work through a single device to transport SDI and MPEG-2 streams for transmission. The signals are encoded or transcoded as needed to optimize Omantel’s fiber network. Fault tolerance is ensured by redundant paths.
In addition to receiving signals from all terrestrial transmitters in Oman, the network provides conditions for live broadcasts of sports and public events on the channel. This highly reliable solution reduces the operational costs of traditional PTS for remote broadcasts. Imagine Communications also supplied portable kits for network expansion.
“Our goal is to develop a network that fulfills our customers’ requirements, is cost-effective and can utilize open telecommunications standards,” said Saeed Abdullah Al Ajmi, Omantel’s COO. “Imagine Communications is a strategic partner that has the broad-based technology that can interoperate with telecommunications standards to create a network like this and can provide local technical support. The core platform is performing exactly as we envisioned, and we continue to work with Imagine to expand our capabilities and fulfill our customers’ requirements.”
Anas Hantash, Sales Director, MENA, Imagine Communications, added: “This groundbreaking installation gives Omantel the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits of real-time IP. They are building a network with the latest telecommunications industry technology that meets high standards of resilience and consistency. Selenio MCP has built the perfect bridge between SDI and IP, as well as between television and telecommunications. Omantel’s customers benefit from quality and reliability.”
